Guide for Travelling Fencers

Flying

  GENERAL
1.

Travelling to the airport : leave plenty of time to get to the airport and check-in

2. Departure Times : Telephone ahead to confirm departure times. This will save hanging around in case of delays
3. Delays : Plan for delays. Make sure you have plenty to keep yourself occupied in case of delays eg books, magazines, cards, portable computer games etc
4. Comfortable Shoes & Clothing : Take comfortable clothing to wear during the flight and shoes which will still be comfortable if your feet swell
5. Ear Plugs : these are useful whether you are planning to sleep or not, as some small aircraft can be very noisy indeed.
6. Contact Lense case & solution : lenses dry out quickly at altitude so wear glasses where possible to avoid eyes becoming tired and sore
7. Stretch Regularly : get up and stretch to avoid stiffness and swelling of legs and feet
.
  EATING AND DRINKING
1. No alcohol : alcohol increases dehydration and should not be drunk at the airport or during the flight
2. Avoid tea, coffee & cola : these contain caffeine which is a diuretic therefore has a dehydrating effect
3. Drink plenty of water : take at least one litre of fluid for drinking during flight. Ask cabin staff for extra drinks
4. Eat regularly & sensibly : supplement your cabin meals with healthy snacks you bring yourself
5. Carry all essential medication in your hand luggage
6. Spare glasses/contact lenses : if you need them to compete in
