Junior and Cadet Ranking Scheme 2005-06

Selection for British Teams

May 2005

The qualifying and ranking scheme to select the team for the World and European Championships is described here.  The same or a different scheme may be used for published national cadet rankings, or for selection for participation in cadet international events etc. The scheme as described here must be used for selection for participation in U20 World Cup events (A-grades)

Qualifying dates

The scoring period for Junior and Cadet fencers commences on 27th June 2005.  No competitions will count for selection to the World championships before this date.  The scoring period ends at the selection date set by the weapon committees: for 2005-6 no results after 13th February 2006 will count.

30% of the previous season’s total points will be carried over onto the new season’s ranking list, and will be removed after the third nominated competition (domestic or international.).

Eligibility

Junior = Under 20 on 1st January 2006 (Born 1986 or later); Cadet = Under 17 on 1st January 2006 (Born 1989 or later), i.e. in the year of the World Championships.

Please note that for safety reasons, no fencer can compete in a competition with over 18 year old fencers during the 2005-6 season, if they are not at least 13 years old on Jan 1st 2006 (born 1992 or later). This includes the British championship held in July 2005. The season for senior & for the purpose of this rule starts on the 1st September each year.

Discipline

Fencers may only be considered for selection if they have a satisfactory disciplinary record.  The selectors and/or the International Committee reserve the right to omit a fencer from selection for any particular event if they deem that fencer’s disciplinary record to be unsatisfactory.

JUNIOR SELECTION

A      Junior World Championships

Selection for the first two places will be made in accordance with the order of the ranking list determined by the scheme described here as on 13th February 2006, from those fencers who have obtained at least one L16 result or two L32 results in one of the four nominated Junior A-grade competitions & the Junior Europeans, or a L32 in a Senior nominated ‘A’ grade, Senior World Championships or Senior Europeans, provided that in achieving any of these results, they were placed in the top 75% of those taking part and got through at least one eliminating round.

If any of the qualifying results are in a Junior competition with an incomplete L64 or a NIF count of less than 600, (obtained with the additional multiplier shown below), then to achieve a qualifying result they must be placed so as to score at least 3000 points in that competition. If any of the qualifying results are in a senior competition with an incomplete L64 or a NIF count of less than 2400, (obtained with the additional multiplier shown below), then to achieve a qualifying result, they must score at least 12000 points in that competition.

The third place will normally be selected in the same way as the first two places using the ranking system described, but the selectors, at the absolute discretion of the International Committee, or at the absolute discretion of the International Committee alone, may select the third fencer in place of a higher ranked fencer even if that fencer is not qualified. This will not normally be at the expense of a qualified fencer.

The reserve (fourth fencer) for the team event may be a cadet already selected for the cadet team, or a qualified junior chosen by the selectors.  Under special circumstances, a non-qualified junior could be considered.

Points will be awarded for the World Junior & Cadet Championships as for other international events. These points will only contribute to the 30% carry over.

 B Junior European Selection

Selection date will be immediately after the GBR senior Championships in July. (As soon as the rankings have been updated)

1. The junior ranking to be used for selection will be compiled as follows: - the ranking used for the Junior World Championships' selection plus

1. the JWC results (will be added as a 4th international result) and

2. inclusion of the GBR Senior Championship results (re-placing the previous season’s event) [This ranking will not have any 30% reduction.]

Selection will be made in accordance with the order of this ranking.  The first 3 on the ranking will be selected automatically; the 4th place (and reserves) will normally be selected in ranking order unless the selectors consider that there are special reasons to nominate a lower ranked fencer. The selectors or International Committee may also decline to select a full team if they consider that the results do not merit selection.

Junior points scheme

Points will be awarded for the best three overseas results from the four Junior nominated ‘A’ grades, the Junior Europeans, all Senior ‘A’ grades for which the fencer has been selected according to the senior ranking rules, Senior World Championships, and Senior European championships.  From Domestic competitions, the best three scores will be taken from up to five nominated home competitions; plus the Junior British Championships, i.e. a total of four scores. Each weapon will decide whether to nominate the senior National Championships as an additional nominated event.

Hence for the junior ranking the best seven results will count; the U20 British Championships plus three home and three ‘overseas’ competitions.

CADET SELECTION

The team will be selected in accordance with the order of the cadet ranking on the 13th February 2006.

Cadet points scheme

The best two results from up to four nominated overseas cadet competitions, nominated Junior ‘A’ grades, Junior and Senior Europeans, Senior World Championships, and all Senior ‘A’ grades for which the fencer has been selected according to the senior ranking rules, (unless Cadet selectors decide otherwise for the senior competitions), will be counted towards the points scheme.

In addition, points will be counted for the best three results from up to six nominated domestic competitions (which must include the Bolton cadet competition), plus the Cadet championships.  Each weapon will decide whether to nominate the senior National Championships as an additional nominated event.

Hence for the cadet ranking, six results will count: the Cadet British Championships plus three home and two ‘overseas’ competitions.

NB.  Junior A grades taking place in the UK e.g. Eden Cup, count as ‘overseas’ for both Juniors and Cadets.

If the selectors decide to exclude a competition, this must be declared at the start of the season when the fixtures are announced and not retrospectively.

POINTS FOR RANKING SCHEMES

Points are awarded to fencers who reach the last 64 of a nominated competition, provided that in doing so they are placed in the top 75% of those competing (this number must not be rounded, 75% is within, and 75.1% is not). For World Cup, European & World Championships fencers must get through an eliminating round of DE.

Calculation of points

The points total scored in each competition is calculated by taking the grading points (NIF), representing the strength of the competition, and multiplying this value by the factor assigned to the fencer’s final position. (See Table 3.)  An additional multiplier will be applied as shown in Table 1

These are based on the top 100 of the junior World ranking immediately before the first junior World Cup event (at the relevant weapon) of the season & the ranking list as at 1st January 06. Each weapon can choose to use the initial ranking for the whole season or to use the 1st January ranking for events in 2006.

Junior points

Juniors may use results from nominated international competitions for their overseas results, i.e. four Junior nominated ‘A’ grades, the Junior Europeans, all Senior ‘A’ grades for which the fencer has been selected according to the senior ranking rules, Senior World Championships, and Senior European championships.

Junior 'A' grades, the Junior World Championships and the Junior Europeans will have a NIF score based on last season’s adjusted top 100 on the U20 World Cup ranking (see table 2 above).  Fencers who are no longer juniors will be removed from the top 100.

The U20 Championships will have a NIF score based on the adjusted top 50 of last season’s final U20 ranking. Fencers who have left the age group will be removed from the top 50.  The NIF will calculated by awarding 6, 3 and 1 points for those in the top 10, 20 and 50 respectively.

Cadet points

Cadets may use results from nominated international competitions for their overseas results, i.e. up to four nominated overseas cadet competitions, four nominated Junior ‘A’ grades, Junior and Senior Europeans, Senior World Championships, and all Senior ‘A’ grades for which the fencer has been selected according to the senior ranking rules

Junior A-grades are scored as the Junior World Cup Rankings as above.

The U17 Championships will either have a fixed NIF score set by the weapon committee, or one based on the adjusted top 50 of last season’s final U17 ranking.  Fencers who have left the age group will be removed from the top 50.  The NIF will calculated by awarding 6, 3 and 1 points for those in the top 10, 20 and 50 respectively.

A multiplier of 2 will be applied to results from any U20 event for the Cadet rankings (as per Table 1 above).

Cadets will be able to count results from the British Youth Championships, Leon Paul series & other age group events, if the relevant weapon’s committee nominates those events. The weapon committee will determine the method of calculating points for these.
