Details are decided by the individual weapon committees. The J/C season will run from 1st July 2006 to 19th February 2007 CADETS - [UNDER 17 on 1.1.07 born 1990 or later for this season] There will be a 30% carry over of points from the previous seasons ranking list, which will be dropped after the 4th nominated A event The nominated events are shown on the chart. For selection for the British Team three categories of competition will be included which are: 1 Home Competitions 3 best results count British Senior Championships, Essex, Bristol, Manchester Cadet, Slough [NIF count as in the senior scheme apart from Manchester] British U20 Championships (multiplier - 2) 2 British Cadet Championships compulsory for selection (apart from exceptional circumstances such as illness). NIF count 75 points 3 International Nominated Competitions 3 best results count (note change from 2) Cadet events 4 if possible see chart (multiplier = 10) There is no international cadet ranking so the relative standards of the various cadet only events are difficult to quantify. The formula for the NIF count is :- 50 + 1/4 x (no of entries)+ 3 x (number of entries who are in the top 100 of the J. World Ranking ) No Junior World Cups will count for cadet points this year. [In general selection for these events will only be made from the top 16 of the British Ranking. As a guide to the recommended standard, you should be able to reach at least the L32 of a strong home event. If this is your first international year and you are not sure which competitions to go to please discuss it with Linda. The number of entries also depends on how many referees we have to send.] For the overall British Ranking an additional category is included 4. Cadet Nominated B Competitions Shropshire, Highland, Hereford & Worcester, Cambridge, Scottish Open, Plymouth [NIF count of (25 plus 3 times the senior NIF), up to a maximum of 100. Maximum possible points = 2000 i.e no extra multiplier]. NB As the organisers of senior competitions do not normally have fencers ages, any cadets not already on the ranking will need to identify themselves to Alan Gardner so that their points can be included. . . Points are only scored on reaching at least the L64 and ending up in the top 75%. NB The international schemes are subject to decisions imposed by the International Committee. Please look out for any changes, which would be publicised on the web site. _______________________ Cadet World Championships 8-16 April 2007 Turkey Selection date after last nominated event in February The top 3 on the selection ranking list will be selected, (subject to fitness and satisfactory behaviour through the season), + a non-travelling reserve. _____________________________________________________________________ JUNIORS - [Under 20 on 1.1.07 born 1987 or later for this season] There will be a 30% carry over of points from the previous seasons ranking list, which will be dropped after the 4th event. The British Ranking List is based on: 1. Home Competitions 3 best results from 4 nominated events (multiplier 4) British Senior Championships, Essex, Bristol, Welsh 2. Junior Championship - compulsory for selection for Junior World Championships (apart from exceptional circumstance such as illness). 3. International Nominated Competitions 3 best results from the 5 nominated A Grades, (multiplier 10), and the Junior European Championship. Points scored as for cadets but with a different multiplier. The nominated events are shown on the chart NB dates sometimes change. Junior A Grades (World Cups) Our entries to these events is limited by the FIE this season it is a maximum of 12, however as 2 referees have to be provided for 10 or more fencers we will normally select 9. Selection will be based on the ranking list subject to fitness and level of training. The selectors can, however, take exceptional circumstances into account, eg injury at the beginning of the season. [Non-nominated A Grades Results can contribute to the World Junior Ranking. If more than 4 fencers go, a referee is required and has to be funded. Entries only via the Junior Captain. Details provided on request. Dates on FIE web site] Remember that if you accept a place at a Junior A Grade and then pull out, without a doctors certificate, too late to be withdrawn, the FIE will fine you 500 Euros. Junior World Championships 8-16 April 2007 Turkey Selection date - after last nominated event Qualification - one L16 or 2x L32 results in nominated junior World Cups, J W Championships 2006 or junior Europeans, [provided that the fencer ends up in the top 50%]. See overall IC scheme for formula to allow for weaker or smaller events. For the first 2 places, those qualified will be selected in the order of the ranking list at the selection date. The 3rd place will normally go to the 3rd ranked qualifier unless the selectors can justify an alternative selection. Selection is subject to fitness and satisfactory behaviour through the season. The most suitable reserve for the team event will be selected. Junior European Championships Nov.2007 Junior European Selection Selection date will be immediately after the GBR Senior Championships in July. (As soon as therankings have been updated) 1. The junior ranking to be used for selection will be compiled as follows: - the ranking used for the Junior World Championships selection plus 1. any JWC results (will be added as a 4th international result) and 2. inclusion of the GBR Senior Championship results (re-placing the previous seasons event) [This ranking will not have any 30% reduction.] Selection will be made in accordance with the order of this ranking. The first 3 on the ranking will be selected automatically; the4th place (and reserves)will normally be selected in ranking order unlessthe selectors consider that there are special reasons tonominate a lower ranked fencer. The selectors or International Committeemay also decline to select a full team if they consider that the results do not merit selection. (NB If the date of the JEs shifts, this may have to be reviewed) GBR Foil Squad Training sessions Linda Strachan and Pierre Harper will continue to run sessions for selected fencers; normally this includes the top ranked juniors and cadets. Anyone hoping to compete abroad should attend these sessions and needs to be fit to make the most of them. Training will be taken into account when selecting for trips abroad as there is no point going unless training at a consistently high level. TRIPS ABROAD Each trip will have a BF organiser to help with the arrangements and accompany the squad. All fencers should stay in the same hotel and as many as possible will travel together. The aim is to be a supportive British squad. If any parents or coaches are intending to go abroad with the squad please inform John Troiano or Paul Sibert as extra help is often invaluable. The costs of the officials required to go will be shared between all fencers entered. If anyone drops out too late to include a reserve they will still be liable for their share of these costs and may not be able to recover cost of tickets etc. We do appreciate the huge costs involved for parents once fencers are good enough to want to go abroad and we do not want any potential team member to drop out because of cost, ,unfortunately now FC funds are very limited. Fencers should do their best to find their own sponsors and we will always be happy to provide official letters of support as long as we are sure that the fencer is training satisfactorily. If payment for centrally booked travel/hotel is not received by the deadline, the place will be offered to the next fencer in line. (There have been endless problems in the past with delayed payments; organisers often have to pay deposits/costs themselves initially). Please remember that all those involved are volunteers who are giving up their own time to help. Prompt replies help a great deal. CHECK LIST for International Fencers NB see BF web site for useful information Any minor (under 18) will be under the care of the BF official from the time they report at the meeting point agreed by parent/guardian and until they arrive back at the agreed departure point. Onward travel alone must be authorised by parent/guardian. All fencers and accompanying adults should familiarise themselves with the BF Guidance for U20 overseas trips, (see web site), in particular with respect to alcohol consumption and unruly behaviour. A high standard of behaviour is expected of you at all times as sporting and fencing representatives of Great Britain. FIE licence - remember to apply for one or renew it in good time via the BFA office. Make a photocopy of it in case of loss. BFA licence as above. Travel Insurance - you must be adequately covered for all trips abroad; an annual policy is highly recommended good value via the BFA. Check that amateur fencing including loss of kit is covered. Doping Control - is carried out at all U-20 A Grades. Check that any medication you are taking or have taken recently is allowed. A TUE (therapeutic use exemption) must be obtained for any banned substance taken for medical reasons and you must have the approval form with you. See TUE guide on website. *** If Under 18, PLEASE take with you signed permission from a parent/guardian to undergo testing. Immunisations - make sure you are up to date with all normal ones including meningitis. Hepatitis A is advisable for many countries. Fencing kit * FIE standard kit is essential for Junior A Grades. All foils and body wires should be checked, including weight testing, before travelling. You should always weight test between fights. For Junior A Grades: Electric jackets must have the surname + GBR marked on the back in the correct way. The GBR strip must now be down both legs of the breeches. Plan your competitive programme sensibly, together with your coach. Realistic goals for each competition and an effective training schedule are important. NB Profiling is a useful way of structuring your training Linda and Clare have details. FOOTWORK The poor footwork of most British fencers relative to their international opponents is commented on over and over again. The quickest way to improve your fencing is by footwork training most days and, if necessary, incorporate appropriate gym exercises to strengthen your legs. As long as your technique is correct, you dont need a coach, (except to monitor progress), or sparring partners, just willpower! Fitness should never let you down some symmetrical, stamina building exercise is essential eg skipping, hill-running.
