Junior Nominated Competitions Juniors count their best 7 results, being the Under-20 Championships, plus 3 domestic competitions and 3 foreign competitions: a) British Junior Championships 7 October 2006 b) Best 3 from the following 5 domestic competitions: Senior Nationals 15 July 2006 Essex 2 September 2006 Bristol 16 September 2006 Leon Paul Int. 22 October 2006 Welsh 11 November 2006 c) Best 3 from the following international competitions. A Grades: Eden Cup, London 21 October 2006 Aix-en-Provence, France 26 November 2006 Burgsteinfurt, Germany 17 December 2006 Como, Italy 4 February 2007 Mdling, Austria 10 February 2007 Junior European Championships 1 - 6 Nov. 2006 Senior A Grades: Any nominated from the 2006-07 season, which fall before the last nominated Junior World Cup. The NIF count for Como and Mdling will be taken from the World Ranking list as of 1 January 2007. The entry for World Cups is now limited to 12, however, 2 referees are required for 10 or more so normally we will select 9 fencers. Junior World Championships, Izmir, Turkey 8-16 April 2007 Qualifying standard. The minimum qualifying standard for selection will be 1 last-16 or 2 last-32 results in the following events: 5 U20 World Cup events nominated above; The 2006 junior European Championships The 2006 junior World Championships OR 1 last-32 in the following events: the senior European Championships the senior World Championships any senior World Cup event between the 4th July 2006 (beginning of senior European Championships) & the selection date. However, for any of these results to count fencers must be placed within the top 50% of those taking part. If any of the results are in a junior competition with an incomplete last-64 or a NIF count of less than 600 (60x10) then to achieve a qualifying result they must score at least 3000 points in that competition for a last-32 or 5160 for a last-16. [A last-16 with less than 5160 but at least 3000 will count as a last-32] If any of the qualifying results are in a senior competition with an incomplete last-64 or a NIF count of less than 2400, (60x10x4), then to achieve a qualifying result they must score at least 12000 points in that competition. Selection for World Championships Selection for the first two places will be made in order of the ranking list as at 19th February 2007 from fencers who have gained the qualifying results, as above. The third place will normally be selected in the same way as the first two places using the ranking system described. However, the selectors or the International Committee alone may select the third fencer in place of a higher ranked fencer. The reserve or fourth fencer for the team event may be any fencer chosen by the selectors. Please note that the International Committee reserves the right, in the light of exceptional circumstances, to modify the qualifying standard and in particular to consider a fencer for selection who has not reached the standard described above, or to not include a qualifying result if the strength of the competition is not sufficient. Cadet Nominated Competitions Cadets can count their best 7 results in the following way: a) British Cadet Championships 7 October 2006 b) Best 3 from the following 7 domestic competitions: Senior Nationals 15 July 2006 Essex 2 September 2006 Bristol 16 September 2006 Manchester Cadet Tournament 30 September 2006 British Junior Championships 8 October 2006 Leon Paul Int. 22 October 2006 Welsh 11 November 2006 c) Best 3 international results from: Eden Cup, London 21 October 2006 Coupe de Samarin, Bratislava 28 October 2006 (Cadet) Koblenz, Germany Jan/Feb 2007 (Cadet) Bad Canstatt, Germany Jan/Feb 2007 (Cadet) Plus any of the international competitions nominated for Juniors above. Points As usual, both Koblenz and Bad Canstatt will rate their traditional NIF of 100 x 10 Selection for the events abroad takes into account the cadet ranking, level of training and fitness to compete. Usually the top 12 cadets are selected but others can be considered if of a similar standard. The Cadet Tournament at Bolton will have the same NIF formula as last year. British entries will be allocated NIFs in the same manner as the Cadet Nationals, i.e. 6 NIF points for any in the top 10 of the GBR cadet ranking, 3 NIFs for those placed 11 20, and one NIF for those placed 21 50. Overseas entries will be rated in accordance with their final placing last-32 - one NIF, last-16 - 3 NIFs and last-8 - 6 NIFs]. Cadet B Competitions The additional B group competitions will contribute to an Overall Cadet Ranking but not towards World Championship selection. 7 are included this year, geographically spread, so that younger fencers have more chances to gain a ranking without excessive travel expenses. N.B. These are to enable more fencers to gain a ranking. They will not contribute to World Championships selection. The best 3 results from the A + B groups will count. Young fencers are not encouraged to undertake the travel necessary to participate in all of them. Shropshire 23 September 2006 Highland 23 September 2006 Hereford & Worcester 2 December 2006 Scottish 6 January 2007 Aldershot 13 January 2007 Plymouth 27 January 2007 Slough 3 February 2007 Eden Cup The Eden Cup Junior A-Grade will be both a Junior and Cadet nominated International. The selection of the 20 British entries will be done as in the past, i.e. the top 8 Cadets will be entitled to enter and then places will be allocated in accordance with the Junior ranking. NB As we are able to make up the pools to 7 there will be a waiting list for fencers prepared to come on the day in case they can fence. They will still need FIE licence + FIE kit. Season and Selection dates The season will run from 4 July 2006 until 19 February 2007. The World Championship Junior team will be selected immediately after the last Junior World Cup. The World Championship Cadet team will be selected immediately after Bad Canstatt in Feb 2006. NB: Both teams will be subject to ratification by the International Committee as soon as possible after 19 February 2007. Cadet World Championships, Izmir, Turkey 8-16 April 2007 The top three fencers in the selection rankings will be chosen plus a non-travelling reserve. Junior European Championships 2007 Selection date will be immediately after the 2007 GBR Senior Championships. The junior ranking to be used for selection will be compiled as follows:- The ranking used for the Junior World Championships' selection plus The JWC results (will be added as a 4th international result)with The 2007 GBR Senior Championship results replacing that of 2006 (assuming a November date for the Junior Europeans) Selection will be made in accordance with the order of this ranking. The first 3 on the ranking will be selected automatically; the4th place (and reserves)will normally be selected in ranking order unlessthe selectors consider that there are special reasons tonominate a lower ranked fencer. The selectors or International Committeemay also decline to select a full team if they consider that the results do not merit selection. [NB If the date of the 2007 Junior Europeans is changed significantly it may be necessary to revise this selection process] Additional Conditions for Selection All the above selections are subject to fitness and satisfactory behaviour throughout the season. The selectors reserve the right to permit an individual fencer to score points at an alternative Junior A Grade if he is prevented from participating in one of the above four as a result of the need to represent British Fencing in an official capacity elsewhere. Points will be awarded for the World Junior & Cadet Championships as for other international events. These points will contribute to the JE selection and then to the 30% carry over. Ranking points Points will be awarded as set out in the overall scheme see BF website. 30% of the previous seasons total will be carried over until after selection for the Eden Cup. Notes on overseas competitions Remember that if you accept a place at a Junior A Grade and then withdraw without a doctors certificate, the FIE will fine you 500 Euros. THIS INCLUDES THE EDEN CUP! If anyone drops out too late to include a reserve they will still be liable for their share of the officials costs. The costs of the officials required to go will be shared between all fencers entered. Any Junior or Cadet who is a minor (under 18) must, when attending an overseas competition, be accompanied by either their parent or legal guardian, or by another suitable adult who carries written authority from the parent or guardian to act in loco parentis. In view of the number of fencers attending foreign cadet competitions, we would appreciate it if only one parent or guardian accompanies each fencer, thus keeping the parties to a reasonable size. All fencers must have travel insurance. An annual policy is usually cheaper if a number of trips are anticipated the BFA can assist you with this. Please note that family policies may only be valid when the principal policy holder is in the party. Please also check that fencing is covered. To obtain reduced cost, or sometimes free, medical treatment in European Economic Area countries or Switzerland, you need a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). From 1 January 2006, the previous form, E111, is no longer valid. Full details may be obtained from the Department of Health website and the EHICs may be obtained on line, by phone or post. It is strongly recommended that you obtain this form. Make sure you are up to date with all normal immunisations, including meningitis. Hepatitis A and Typhoid are also advisable for many countries. Overseas trips usually cost an average of around 250 involving a flight, taxi fares, 1-2 nights accommodation, meals, entry fees and a contribution to the cost of sending a referee/official. We do appreciate the huge costs involved for the parents of fencers eligible to compete abroad and do not want any potential team member to drop out because of financial reasons. We therefore suggest that fencers should do their best to find sponsors and we will always be happy to provide official letters of support providing we are sure that the fencer is training satisfactorily. British Fencing sends in the formal entries for the competitions but has no funds or facilities to book flights and hotels. However, the administrator will be happy to provide advice and help to bring groups together for convenience. In general, it is the fencers and coaches own responsibility to arrange travel and accommodation for overseas trips, although if possible group arrangements will be made for the overseas cadet competitions. At the competition itself, the formally designated referee/official will be responsible for fencing matters for the whole British contingent. The whole group are expected to act as a mutually supportive British squad and to behave responsibly. All fencers and accompanying adults should familiarise themselves with British Fencings code of conduct for fencers travelling abroad, in particular the points relating to consumption of alcohol and unruly behaviour. Remember to apply for an FIE licence (for all FIE events) or renew it in good time via the BFA office. Make a photocopy of it in case of loss. The same should apply for your BFA licence. Standard FIE kit is essential must be worn at Junior A Grades. All foils and body wires must be checked, including weight testing, before travelling. For Junior A Grades, electric jackets must have the surname & GBR marked on the back in the correct way. The GBR strip, which is available from both Leon Paul and Allstar-Ullman UK, must be down both legs of the breeches. Doping Control is carried out at all U-20 A Grades. Check that any medication you are taking or have taken recently is allowed. A Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) is required for any banned substance taken for medical reasons.
