No: 0207 476 2015 Mobile: 07956 61 88 98 lindastrachan@hotmail.com Information Regarding The Senior Individual Ranking Scheme and Selection Procedure For 2007 v1 Dear Fencer, This letter is being sent to all fencers in the top 15 of the National Ranking and will also be available on the Foil Committee website. Ranking Scheme (from International Committee document) The relevant results will be the fencers best 6 results of which no more than 3 results may be from overseas competitions. Fencers may now compete for points in all overseas competitions. Please see form at the end of this letter. 2006/7 Points System For home competitions, points will be awarded to fencers who reach the last 64 of an open competition provided that they are placed in the top 75% of those competing. For FIE Grand Prix and World Cup competitions and for World and European Championships, points will be awarded to fencers who reach the last 64 of a competition provided that the fencer is placed in the top 50% of those competing. Any fencer who wishes to rely on the results of an overseas competition must send, as soon as practically possible, to the points compiler and the chairman of the selectors, a complete set of that competitions results or check that this has been done. For full details see IC document on British Fencing web site. Selection and Participation In Competitions FIE Grand Prix/World Cup A-Grade Competitions This season, selection will normally be from the top 12 in the Senior National Rankings, with priority given to those who have achieved at least 3 L.8s in the major domestic Opens (namely, Essex, Bristol, Leicester, Welsh, Slough and the Nationals. If at least five of the top 9 ranked fencers, at the date of selection, wish to enter a nominated World Cup (A grade) event, then the selectors/weapon committee should arrange for a referee to be sent and ideally a full team of 9 should be sent. However, especially for competitions outside the European Zone, if it proves impossible to identify a referee to attend the A grade, due to reasons such as time or cost, then the selectors will restrict the entry to a maximum of 4. The top four ranked fencers will be automatically entitled to be selected. Any fencer ranked 5 or below will be subject to selection at the Performance Director and selectors discretion, who in their absolute discretion may take other factors other than ranking positions into account, provided that no manifest unfairness is caused to any other fencer. Team selection for a Grand Prix Team event will be made by the Performance Director, and National Coach (if any) with advice from the selectors. The team shall be automatically selected for the individual event. World Championships and European Championships Selection to fence in the individual event at both the World and European Championships will be made according to the order of the national rankings from amongst those fencers who have reached the qualifying standard, subject to the provisions of the following paragraphs. The qualifying standard for World Championship will be at least one last 8 result or one L16 and one L32 in Senior World Championships/Senior European Championships/FIE Grand Prix/World Cup (A-grade) competitions in the period of 12 months prior to the selection date - but see IC Scheme for full details. Selection for the European Championships will be on the same basis as for World Championships except that the qualifying standard will be one L32 or two L64s results in Senior World Championships/Senior European Championships/FIE Grand Prix/World Cup (A-grade) competitions. Notwithstanding the qualifying standard for individual events, any weapon which stands in the top 12 of the world cup team rankings at the relevant selection date, or finished in the top eight placing in the Senior World Championships or European Championships of the previous year, may send a full team of four fencers to the World and European Championships, as appropriate. For a qualifying result to be valid, the fencer must have been placed in the top 50% of those competing. If an event has an incomplete L64 tableau, and a NIF count of less than or equal to 600, then the result will be downgraded by one round (e.g. a L16 result will count as equivalent to a L32). If an event has an incomplete L32 tableau and/or a NIF count of less than, or equal to, 300, then the result will be downgraded by two rounds (e.g. a L8 result will count as equivalent to a L32). If an event has an incomplete L16 tableau then no qualifying result will count. The International Committee has absolute discretion to vary these requirements in relation to the actual results at competitions with an overall intention of (a) ensuring fairness and (b) protecting against weak results counting as a qualifying standard The International Committee may recommend for selection to the World or European Championships any fencer who has not met the qualifying standard, provided that any such fencer does not deprive a qualified fencer from being selected. For the purpose of selection to the World Championships and European Championships, the International Committee may in its absolute in its absolute discretion modify the rules for points and the qualifying standard retrospectively where special circumstances affect the result of any particular competition (e.g. significantly reduced participation, walk-over result, or minimal entry). Fencers may only be considered for selection if they have a satisfactory disciplinary record. The Performance Director, selectors and/or the International Committee reserve the right to omit a fencer from selection for any particular event if they deem that fencers disciplinary record to be unsatisfactory. Fencers are expected to maintain a satisfactory level of training and fitness. The Performance Director, selectors and/or the International Committee reserve the right to omit a fencer from selection for any particular event if they deem that fencers fitness or training record is unsatisfactory. They may also request a fencer to demonstrate a satisfactory level of fitness. The 2007 European Championships will take place in Gent 2-7 July. The 2007 World Championships will take place in St Petersburg 28 Sep 6 Oct . Travel and Accommodation Arrangements For A Grade Competitions Those entering FIE World Cup (A Grade) competitions will normally be expected to make their own travel arrangements. If you hear of any good deals, please let me know so that I may pass this on to other fencers. Alan Gardner will be helping me to organise accommodation for FIE World Cup competitions. If you wish to make your own arrangements or take a partner, you must let me know when taking up your place. Once hotel arrangements have been made then they will not be changed (as was the case in the past). If a twin room is booked for you and you do not attend the competition, then you will be expected to pay for half of the cost of the accommodation. All fencers attending FIE World Cup (A grades) will be expected to share the travel and accommodation cost of sending a referee if one is required. This also applies to anyone who drops out after the referee costs have been incurred, unless their place can be taken by another fencer. NB. The FIE will impose a fine of 500 Euros on a fencer who fails to attend, unless a medical certificate is provided. Overseas B Grades (FIE Satellites) Please notify me if you intend to enter these events. Normally, there is no problem with the number of entries but they have to be made by the BF Office observing the strict deadline. Selectors For Womens Senior Foil 30. The other selectors for this season are: Clare Halsted: 0207 485 1498 Paul Sibert: 01159176655 Compilation Of Points 31. Paul Sibert will compile the points for this season. If you have any questions please contact him. Completion Of Form For Nominated FIE World Cup (A Grade) Competitons At the end of this letter is a form, which must be completed by those of you interested in competing in overseas competitions. All forms should be returned to me by 15 January, 2007, at the address at the top of this letter. If you do not, you will not be selected to fence abroad and you will not receive any further details. NB Selection for Belgrade on 10 Feb will be sorted out before receipt of the replies. Notification Of Selection For A Grades 33. You will receive notification of your selection for an A Grade from me via telephone and will be expected to reply by the time given. If you do not reply by the deadline, your place will be offered to a reserve and you will lose your place. 20.12.06 Womens Senior Foil A and B Grades For 2007 DateCompetitionSelection DateInterested In Selection?
